Aurorasound’s New HFSA-02. An Amplifier Outside the Ordinary
When I was looking for a new phono amplifier some years ago, before Walden High-End Audio, I came across Aurorasound. I had never heard of the brand, but when listening to the VIDA MKII phono amplifier, I discovered a sound that immediately drew me in: the expressiveness and fluidity one associates with a good tube amplifier, combined with a sense of scale and energy. Since then, I have continued to follow this remarkable Japanese brand and have become a loyal admirer.
About the brand
Aurorasound is based in Yokohama and was founded by Shinobu Karaki, an engineer with a long background in electronics who spent many years at Texas Instruments Japan. The company grew from his own work as an audio enthusiast, designing and building the amplifiers and phono stages he wanted for himself. Aurorasound describes its approach as combining careful, fundamentally sound circuit design with measurement, listening and hands-on construction. Its products are assembled and tested in-house, reflecting a philosophy closer to craftsmanship than mass production.
That philosophy is evident throughout the range. Aurorasound pays close attention to circuit topology, component selection and mechanical construction, while avoiding unnecessary complexity. High-grade components are selected for both performance and reliability, and much of the work is carried out by hand. The aim is not to follow fashion, but to make equipment that can be enjoyed for many years.
About the HFSA-02
While Aurorasound’s hybrid designs have a character of their own, the HFSA-02 takes a different route. It is the company’s orthodox all-tube integrated amplifier, with ECC83/12AX7 tubes in the input stage, ECC82/12AU7 tubes in a Mullard-type phase inverter, and a push-pull quartet of EL34/6CA7 output tubes. The output stage uses Lundahl output transformers in an ultra-linear configuration, delivering 31 watts per channel into 8 ohms.

Built quality
The HFSA-02's appeal goes well beyond its tube complement. Aurorasound specifies resistors from Vishay, PRP and Japanese TAKUMAN, WIMA film capacitors and TDK-EPCOS electrolytic capacitors. Its power and choke transformers are custom-made in Japan, while a ROHM silicon-carbide rectifier diode is used in the power supply. Internal construction combines hand wiring with printed circuit boards, the latter using 70μm copper foil - twice the thickness of conventional PCB copper. Carefully selected terminals receive thick gold plating.
Then there is the cabinet. The 22mm solid maple frame and 4mm solid aluminium top plate create an unusually substantial structure for an amplifier of this type. Furthermore, the woodwork deserves particular attention. Aurorasound's use of real wood is not a decorative afterthought. Details such as the wooden controls and beautifully executed solid-wood construction reinforce the idea that this is an object made to acquire value through ownership, rather than become obsolete with the next model cycle.
A Flexible Foundation
Versatility is another reason the HFSA-02 is relevant. In its standard configuration, it offers four RCA line inputs, but Aurorasound also provides factory-configured versions with either an MM phono input or a balanced XLR input. There is also a power-amplifier version, with RCA/XLR input and no volume control or input selector. The configuration is determined at the time of ordering, with the corresponding rear panel fitted accordingly.
Accolades collected since it’s launch
The recent response has been remarkable. Aurorasound itself reports that the HFSA-02 received several major distinctions, including Stereo Sound Magazine's Grand Prix 2025.
Reviewers have also responded enthusiastically. In its April 2026 review, Polish publication High Fidelity described the amplifier's appeal in particularly telling terms:
“It’s the kind of sound many music lovers dream of but are unable to achieve.”
More recently, Michael Lavorgna of Twittering Machines concluded that the HFSA-02 combined “a stunning level of clarity with a refined, wonderfully textured and harmonically rich voice,” ultimately ranking it among his “favorites of favorites.”
Why the HFSA-02 belongs at Walden
The brand's complete range reflects a clear, individual approach: carefully engineered, elaborately built, handmade in Japan and specified with components chosen for performance and reliability rather than marketing effect.
The HFSA-02 is the pure tube counterpart to the special hybrid designs Aurorasound has created, offering a more classic architecture while remaining thoroughly relevant to modern digital and analogue systems.
And perhaps that is its greatest achievement. The HFSA-02 does not try to impress by doing everything differently. It takes proven ideas, executes them with exceptional care and combines them into something with genuine long-term value.
