Audio-Technica AT33xMONO/II Phono Cartridge
New!
The AT33xMONO/II features a “True Mono” dual moving coil design that is unaffected by any vertical noise components picked up from the record groove, instead generating electrical signal only from horizontal movement. This results in exceptionally clear monaural sound with a more substantial low end and reduced surface noise. The dual mono coil design is also ideal for mono playback on a stereo system.

To further enhance its monaural performance, the cartridge is equipped with a 0.65 mil conical nude stylus, which is perfect for tracking the constant width and depth of mono record grooves. Our newly developed suspension mechanism uses piano wire for even better tracking accuracy, lowering the dynamic compliance slightly for more substantial audio, particularly in the mid-low range.
The cartridge’s composite body, made of die-cast zinc, aluminium, and high-rigidity polymer, reduces and disperses resonance across the entire body, resulting in balanced, natural sound reproduction that doesn’t favor particular frequencies. PCOCC (Pure Copper by Ohno Continuous Casting) coils ensure pure, smooth signal transmission, while the samarium cobalt magnet and pure iron yoke (shaped for optimal monaural sound reproduction) provide highly efficient power generation and warm, richly textured playback that is particularly suitable for mid-20th-century mono jazz recordings.
Like all AT33x Series cartridges, the body of the AT33xMONO/II includes threaded holes for easy mounting (just two screws required). These threaded holes are especially useful when mounting the cartridge to an integrated tonearm.
Please Note: AT33xMONO/II’s stylus assembly is not field-replaceable, but Audio-Technica offers a fee-based Moving Coil Exchange Program to properly service your moving coil cartridge.
Material Difference
The AT33xMONO/II’s rigid duralumin pipe cantilever, which tapers toward the conical stylus tip for improved response, is linked with a firm suspension mechanism, slightly lowering the dynamic compliance. “True Mono” PCOCC coils are positioned at the cantilever’s fulcrum to ensure pure transmission of horizontal mono signals.
Sound Body
Each AT33x Series cartridge body is constructed of three distinct materials – die-cast zinc, aluminium, and high-rigidity polymer – optimally arranged to reduce and disperse resonance across the cartridge body so that no frequency predominates during playback. Threaded holes are incorporated into the body for easy mounting.

Generator Principle
The moving coil principle was chosen as the basis for the design of the IO range of cartridges, as it offers greater linearity in terms of electrical output from the mechanical movements of the stylus than any other system. We investigated moving iron, moving magnet, strain gauge, electret and electrostatic generators, and even took the unusual step of acquiring a Toshiba cartridge that employed light emitting diodes to generate the signal from the groove, but in the end it was felt that the quality of the moving coil system as described by P. G. A. H. Voigt would yield the best overall results.

Featuring a special line contact stylus on a 0.28 mm diameter solid boron cantilever, the AT-ART9XI replaces the AT-ART9 as Audio-Technica’s flagship magnetic core MC cartridge.
The “ART” in the model number stands for Audio-Technica Reference Transducer, a designation that we give only to our flagship phono cartridges. The specially designed magnetic circuit boasts an output voltage of 0.5 mV (1 kHz, 5 cm/sec), making the cartridge easy to use and capable of reproducing even the most delicate expressions, while also ensuring dynamic playback. The dual moving coils (fashioned from high-performance PCOCC wire) are aligned in an inverted V shape to provide high separation and wide response for clear sound localization and minimal distortion. Threaded cartridge mounting holes make installation to a headshell or integrated tonearm incredibly easy.
An update of the AT-ART7, the AT-ART9XA non-magnetic core MC cartridge features a Shibata stylus on a 0.28 mm diameter solid boron cantilever.
The “ART” in the model number stands for Audio-Technica Reference Transducer, a designation that we give only to our flagship phono cartridges. Compared with the magnetic core used in most MC cartridges, non-magnetic core cartridges are free from magnetic distortion, allowing for natural timbre and a precise sound field.
Although conventional non-magnetic cores struggle with output voltage, the AT-ART9XA features a newly designed coil armature with an improved output voltage of 0.2 mV (1 kHz, 5 cm/sec). The dual moving coils (fashioned from high-performance PCOCC wire) are aligned in an inverted V shape to provide high separation and wide response. Threaded cartridge mounting holes make installation to a headshell or integrated tonearm incredibly easy.
