Texas Instruments LMX2594 DDS Used
For the DDS, we have adopted the Texas Instruments PLLatinum™ RF synthesizer LMX2594, which boasts world-class specifications—an outstanding figure of merit of -236 dBc/Hz and jitter of just 45 fs (femtoseconds; one femtosecond is 1/1000 of a picosecond). This marks the first use of such a device in an audio DDS. The result is an ultra-low-jitter system that delivers exceptionally clear and deeply immersive spatial reproduction, whether operating with a high-precision external clock or the built-in TCXO.
Supports 10MHz external reference clock input
The built-in clock employs a high-performance TCXO with industry-leading close-in phase noise performance of -121 dB at a 10 Hz offset. To prevent jitter caused by the IC, a high-frequency mechanical contact relay is used to switch between the internal and external clocks. When an external clock is in use, the internal clock is powered down to halt oscillation, thereby eliminating mutual interference.
The external clock input now features a new SMA terminal with superior high-frequency characteristics and a reinforced structure. This design removes the need for the conversion plug previously required when connecting the X-3 clock generator. Using the X-3 yields a dramatic improvement in sound quality across the entire frequency range.
ES9038PRO Resistor IV Circuit
Two ES9038PRO chips, each offering a powerful output current of 120 mA, are used per channel. This configuration enables I/V conversion through a single low-resistance resistor, eliminating TIM distortion—a common issue in feedback-type I/V circuits—and resulting in a completely non-feedback D/A converter. The ES9038PROs also operate in synchronous mode, ensuring the highest possible sound quality.
In addition to the conventional FIR oversampling mode, we have adopted a NOS (non-oversampling) mode, which can be regarded as a non-feedback approach in the digital domain. This mode eliminates the pre-echoes and post-echoes observed in the impulse response of FIR oversampling.
The pre-echoes and post-echoes in the impulse output waveform (analog output) of an FIR oversampling filter are artificial “sounds” generated by calculations that use data points before and after the target data to perform interpolation. While this process makes waveforms such as sine waves appear smoother, the calculation algorithm can alter the sound quality and introduce temporal ambiguity.
Impulse output waveform (analog output) in NOS mode
This waveform can only be realized when combined with a non-feedback discrete amplifier that eliminates analog filters. Since musical waveforms are essentially a series of impulse waveforms of varying amplitudes, NOS mode removes ambiguity in time-axis information, delivering a more realistic and natural sound quality, along with an enhanced sense of spatial presence to the human ear—which is highly sensitive to timing accuracy.
Equipped with a 400 VA bifilar-wound, high-regulation toroidal transformer featuring eight secondary windings. The power transformer offers regulation comparable to that of a high-power amplifier, while separate rectifier circuits for each stage prevent mutual interference. In addition, unwanted vibrations from the transformer are discharged to the exterior of the chassis via spikes positioned directly beneath it.
The D-2 employs a four-layer circuit board with 70-micron copper foil and optimized PCB artwork to eliminate noise at its source. Comprehensive noise suppression—achieved without relying on components such as ferrite filters, which can degrade sound quality—keeps unwanted emissions below the noise floor level in all operating modes.
